OH Applications - Creative Writing

As an example of how a single image can inspire different thoughts and ideas in different individuals, here are two short stories written by two children, based on the same set of five cards from Mythos. The second card was chosen at random and revealed only after the first card had been finished with and so on and so forth...

My thanks to Ian and Vera for writing these stories and allowing me to publish them here. In transcribing the stories, I have stayed true to the originals.

Story by Ian T.
Age 11

Once there was a Christmas beetle. His name was Bob.

Once upon a time there lived a beetle. This beetle wasn't like other beetles. He was rainbow in colour unlike the old black ones.

One day two cave women came to visit Bob. They were hungry from paddling long distanceses so Bob showed them where to find food.

One day the rainbow beetle went to what seemed like a tree. He was trying to find some food until he realised he was in a canoe.

In the canoe there were two men they were dressed in orange. One was slightly smaller than the other. The beetle looked over the edge of the canoe. He fell in shock after he saw the waters edge. The rainbow beetle was trapped...

But the only problem was that there was no food left. "Some one must have tooken all the food" said Bob. There was only a drum there and that was all. The cave women said to Bob that if he doesn't find food they will eat him up. Bob was terrified but he would not give up. So Bob said "What can I do with this drum?" "I know said Bob". "I will play the drum and maybe something might happen. So he played it and...

The beetle desperately needed to find a way out. At the back of the canoe was a drum. The beetle thought and thought how to get out. Suddenly he had an idea! The beetle climbed on the drum and kept jumping up and down then whoosh! Up went the beetle flying in the air and landed on the wall.

there was a map. Bob could not read it but the cave women could. So they followed the map.

On the wall there was a lot of moss and other things growing on it. The beetle tried to walk along the wall and find a way out but there was no where he could see an entrance or exit! Now this time he was trapped AND lost! He walked sadly across the wall when suddenly he felt a slope. The slope was not very deep. He soon realised that it was ancient writing carved on the wall. He wondered what it could be...

They travelled long distances until they reached a little place. There was a lader to the sky and so they all climbed up together and in the clouds there were alot of fruit and vegetables and they lived there happily ever after.

THE END

The beetle kept following the carved words until he could finally see an exit! At last the trecherous journey had ended! He was at last free! From that day on he never looked for food on trees.
